$/lb only appears when you provide a basis weight

Basis weight (lb/MSF) is a property of the specific board and combination, not something a piece size alone can tell you. This calculator never guesses it — the $/lb figure stays blank until you enter a basis weight yourself.

Total job cost follows total MSF

When you enter a quantity, the calculator first computes total MSF for the job (piece area × quantity ÷ 1,000), then multiplies by $/MSF. That is the same math a mill or converter uses to price a run.

Price/MSF calculator questions

What does $/MSF mean?
MSF stands for one thousand square feet — "M" is the Roman numeral for 1,000, same as it is in "$/M" pricing. A price of $60/MSF means $60 for every 1,000 square feet of material, regardless of how big or small the individual sheet or piece is. It is the standard way corrugated and paperboard pricing is compared across different sheet sizes.
What is the difference between $/M and $/MSF?
$/M is the price for 1,000 pieces, whatever size those pieces are. $/MSF is the price for 1,000 square feet of material. Because 1,000 pieces of an A-square-foot piece is exactly A thousand square feet of material, $/MSF = $/M ÷ (piece area in square feet). $/MSF lets you compare two different sheet sizes on equal footing; $/M does not, since a bigger sheet naturally costs more per M even at the same underlying material price.
How do I calculate square footage for a sheet or blank?
Multiply the length and width in inches, then divide by 144 (the number of square inches in a square foot). A 24 × 18 inch sheet is 432 square inches, which is 3 square feet. This calculator does that step automatically from the dimensions you enter.
How do I convert a price to $/lb?
You need the basis weight of the board — how many pounds one thousand square feet of it weighs (lb/MSF). Once you have that, $/lb = $/MSF ÷ (lb/MSF). Basis weight varies by flute profile and combination, so this calculator never assumes a value — it only shows $/lb once you enter the basis weight yourself.
Why does the same $/MSF price give a different $/M for two different box sizes?
Because $/M scales with how much material is actually in each piece. A larger sheet at the same $/MSF contains more square feet per piece, so it costs more per thousand pieces even though the underlying material price per square foot hasn’t changed. This is exactly why $/MSF, not $/M, is the number to compare when evaluating whether a price is competitive.
Does this calculator account for waste, scrap, or die-cut yield?
No. It converts between pricing bases for a given finished sheet size only — it does not account for trim waste, layout yield on a larger parent sheet, or manufacturing scrap. Those factors affect what a supplier actually charges and should be confirmed directly with your supplier or converter.
How do I get a blank size from a box’s inside dimensions?
Switch to "Calculate blank size from RSC inside dimensions" and enter the box’s inside length, width, and depth. For a standard Regular Slotted Container, blank length = 2 × (length + width) + manufacturer’s joint, and blank width = depth + width. The calculator derives the blank size first, then prices it exactly the same way as a manually entered sheet size.
What is a manufacturer’s joint, and why does it default to 1.5 inches?
It is the glue or tape flap that closes an RSC into a tube — the extra board beyond the four wall panels (2 × length + 2 × width). 1.5 inches is a commonly used default, but converters vary, so this calculator lets you enter the exact value your supplier uses instead of assuming it.

Piece area

The combined square footage, in thousands, of an entire order — piece area × quantity ÷ 1,000.
RSC
Regular Slotted Container — the most common corrugated box style, formed from a single blank with four flaps top and bottom.
Manufacturer’s joint
The glue or tape flap that closes an RSC blank into a tube. Defaults to 1.5in here; adjustable to match your converter.
Blank size
The flat sheet dimensions before folding — what a mill or converter actually cuts and prices.

What this tool does not tell you

This is a pricing conversion tool, not a quoting tool. It converts between $/M, $/MSF, and $/lb for a given sheet size — it does not know what a fair market price is, and it does not source or quote packaging.

It does not account for trim waste, layout yield on a parent sheet, freight, tooling or plate charges, minimum order quantities, or any other cost that a supplier may add on top of material pricing.

Basis weight (lb/MSF) is never assumed. $/lb only appears once you enter a basis weight yourself, because it depends on the specific board and flute combination.

The RSC blank-size mode uses a standard layout formula (blank width = depth + width, assuming each flap is half the box width) — a widely used default, but not every converter’s exact score layout. The manufacturer’s joint is adjustable; the flap-depth assumption is not. Confirm the exact blank against your converter for a production order.
