How the calculation works

This reuses the same validated geometry engine behind the Pallet Pattern Generator — a loaded pallet fits into a trailer the same way a case fits onto a pallet.

The same validated engine as the pallet calculator

This is the same question the Pallet Pattern Generator answers — how many rectangular units fit in a larger rectangle, by floor space, height, and weight — with the loaded pallet playing the role of the case, and the trailer floor playing the role of the pallet. Every floor pattern still passes the same mandatory geometric validation: no overlaps, nothing outside the floor.

Height resolves double-stacking automatically

Trailer height minus loaded pallet height determines whether a second tier fits — the same layer-by-height math the pallet calculator uses, just applied to stacking loaded pallets instead of cases.

Weight is checked independently of floor space

Payload ÷ loaded pallet weight gives a maximum count on its own. The calculator reports whichever limit — floor space, height, or weight — actually caps your load, rather than assuming space is always the binding constraint.

How many pallets fit on a 53-foot trailer?
It depends on pallet footprint, whether pallets are turned, and stack height — there's no single answer that applies to every load. As a reference point, a standard 48×40in pallet straight-loaded (all facing the same way) typically runs about 26 per floor row in a 53' dry van; turning pallets 90° to use the width more efficiently can push that toward 30. This calculator runs the same mixed-orientation search the Pallet Pattern Generator uses, for your actual pallet footprint, height, and weight — not a generic rule of thumb.
What trailer and truck sizes does this calculator support?
Three presets, plus fully custom entry: a 53' dry van (630in × 99in × 110in interior, 45,000 lb payload), a 48' dry van (570in × 99in × 110in interior, 45,000 lb payload), and a 26' box truck (312in × 96in × 96in interior, 10,000 lb payload — the common non-CDL size). These are mid-range figures from published spec guides, not a universal standard. Picking a preset fills in all four fields, and every field stays editable afterward — enter your own carrier or truck's actual numbers for an exact answer.
How does double-stacking work in this calculator?
If your loaded pallet height leaves enough trailer height for a second tier, the calculator stacks it automatically — the same height math the Pallet Pattern Generator uses for layers on a single pallet, applied to stacking loaded pallets inside the trailer instead. Turn off "allow double-stack" to force a single floor layer regardless of height headroom, for product that can't be stacked on itself.
Why does adding a weight limit sometimes reduce the count by more than expected?
Floor space and trailer height often allow more pallets than the payload limit does — for heavy product, weight is usually the real constraint, not space. This calculator checks both independently and reports whichever one actually binds, rather than assuming floor space is always the answer.
Does this account for axle weight distribution, not just total payload?
No. It checks total cargo weight against the payload limit you enter, not how that weight is distributed across the trailer's axles. Federal axle weight limits (20,000 lb single axle, 34,000 lb tandem, under the 80,000 lb gross combination limit) can restrict a legal load before total payload does, especially for dense, front- or rear-loaded freight. Confirm axle distribution with your carrier for a load that's close to the weight limit.
Does this replace load planning software or a real load plan?
No. It answers the same geometric and weight question the Pallet Pattern Generator answers for a single pallet, scaled up to a trailer — a strong planning estimate, not a stowage plan. It doesn't account for load sequencing, axle distribution, mixed SKUs, or in-transit shift. Confirm a critical or near-capacity load with your carrier.

Trailer loading terms

Floor-loaded
Pallets placed one layer high on the trailer floor — no double-stacking.
Double-stacked
A second loaded pallet stacked directly on top of the first, when trailer height allows it.
Turned loading
Rotating some pallets 90° from the rest to use the trailer's width more efficiently — the same mixed-orientation idea the Pallet Pattern Generator uses for cases on a pallet, applied to pallets in a trailer.
Payload
The cargo weight a trailer can legally carry — total gross vehicle weight (commonly 80,000 lb) minus tractor and trailer tare weight.
Floor utilization
The loaded pallets' combined footprint as a percentage of the trailer's floor area.

This calculator answers a geometric and weight question — how many loaded pallets fit by floor space, height, and payload. It does not evaluate load stability, axle weight distribution, load sequencing, mixed-SKU stowage, or in-transit shift.

Actual interior dimensions and legal payload vary by manufacturer, tractor and trailer tare weight, and specific truck or carrier equipment. Weight checking compares total cargo weight to the payload limit you enter. It does not check federal axle weight limits (20,000 lb single axle / 34,000 lb tandem), which can restrict a legal load before total payload does for dense or unevenly distributed freight.
